Make moving week a little calmer

Fiona’s field notes · 24 September 2026

The best moving checklist is one you can find when everything else is in a box. Keep it short, visible and shared with the people helping you.

Confirm access early

Ask about moving hours, lift bookings, loading arrangements and any building-specific requirements. Confirm these with the relevant building management or provider rather than assuming every property works the same way.

Pack a first-night bag

Keep chargers, toiletries, medication, a change of clothes, basic cleaning supplies and drinking water separate from the main boxes. Carry keys and essential documents yourself.

Label for where things go

Use the destination room and a short description on more than one side of each box. Mark fragile items clearly. A simple numbered inventory helps you notice missing boxes without opening everything.

Keep a handover record

Make a record of the keys and access devices received. Photograph relevant meter readings and the agreed handover condition where appropriate. Store the record with the documents for your move.

Leave breathing room

Plan the essential setup first: a place to sleep, a usable bathroom and a clear walkway. The final shelf arrangement can wait until you have lived in the space.
